Dr. Lisa Grassam

Welcome to the Soroptimist International of Stuart website. We are a club of business and professional women on the Treasure Coast dedicated to bettering the lives of women and girls throughout our local community and the world. Soroptimist International of Stuart was established in 1954 and has a rich history of giving back to the community.

The club’s first project was saving the Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge on Hutchinson Island and its establishment as a museum. The club has undertaken many significant projects over the years, including the provision of over 1,000 mammogram certificates to women in need through our signature program SOS/SOS (Save Our Selves/Save Our Sisters); $20,000 to construct two pavilions at the Mary J. Brogan park; scholarships to high school seniors and assistance to Pathfinder Scholarship nominees; and many other ambitious accomplishments.

Soroptimist International of Stuart often reaches beyond our local community. The club funded two birthing units at a clinic in Honduras and partnered with Shared Hope to provide funds to construct a home in Jamaica which shelters young girls who are victims of sex trafficking.

The club’s commitment to stop human and sex trafficking led to a Human Trafficking Summit held by the club on January 22, 2009. The purpose of this summit was to educate the community on human and sex trafficking. As a result of the summit, a coalition, headed by our Martin County Sheriff’s Department, was formed to hopefully eliminate trafficking on the Treasure Coast.

On the lighter side, the club coordinated the Stuart Holiday Parade for over 25 years. The club hosts a Woman of Distinction event each year to recognize women who make significant contributions to our community. The funds raised by the club through our Women of Distinction event are distributed to support many organizations throughout the Treasure Coast. To name just a few, Soroptimist International of Stuart has donated funds to House of Refuge, Martin Memorial Hospital, Hospice, Martin County Public Library, YMCA, Safe Space, Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Molly’s House, Martin County Firefighters, Meals on Wheels, and Mary’s Shelter.

We are proud of our dedication to our community and will continue that tradition throughout the coming year. Please feel free to browse our website to learn of our many other endeavors and activities. If you are interested in joining our club, please contact our membership chair Jeanine Webster at 772-631-6525.
