Community
Service
Community Service Awards are another way that Soroptimist International
of Stuart exhibits their core values of improving the lives of
women and girls and gives back to the community. The community
is asked to submit grant request that meet the mission of improving
the lives of women and girls. The request must identify the objectives
of the project, define the particular problem or condition in
the lives of women and girls that the funds will address, the
level of support requested and the anticipated outcomes. The volunteers
on the Community Service committee review each of the requests
and determine how the funds will be rewarded.
In 2007, the following community agencies received
funding from Soroptimist International of Stuart.
• Martin County Healthy Start Coalition, Inc. Beds 4 Babies
Project was awarded $3750.00 to purchase 50 cribs for eligible
families. The project was in response to increased infant deaths
that occurred when a baby was sleeping in an adult bed or other
non-crib furniture.
• Hope Center for Autism was awarded $1000.00 to purchase
materials and curriculum supplies for their Jensen Beach Center.
• PACE Center for Girls was awarded $1000.00 to be utilized
in their Martin County programs.

Here are the
awards offered:

This is an annual Soroptimist International of Stuart award designed
to assist a woman who is the main support for her family and hopes
to pursue additional education to improve the lives of her family.
The applicant is asked to complete an application including an
essay describing her career goals and how education and/or skills
training will assist her in accomplishing her goals. Volunteer
judges from the community are asked to score the applications.
The award winner is given the opportunity to compete for additional
scholarships within our Southern Region.

This annual award is given to support young women and the organization
for which they volunteer. The young women is required to submit
an application detailing the organization in which they volunteer
and how they have contributed to the organization. The applicants
are scored by volunteers and the young woman and her organization
receive a monetary award.

The Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award is designed
to honor women who work to improve the lives of women and girls
through their personal or volunteer efforts or through professional
avenues. Although, not Soroptimists, their work helps promote
the issues that are important to Soroptimists. Examples would
be a woman who helps to establish a domestic violence shelter;
starts a mentoring program for at-risk girls; or lobbies her company
to provide on-site child care. The award begins at the local level
and goes on to region and then federation levels. The recipient
will be invited to accept her award at Soroptimist’s biennial
convention or other federation meeting.
