Save OurSelves, Save Our Sisters In June 1997, the Breast Cancer Awareness Program was conceived and it has become the signature program of the Save OurSelves, Save Our Sisters committee of Soroptimist International of Stuart. It is the goal of SIS to spread our SOS message to as many women as possible. FREE MAMMOGRAMS: One in every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime and early detection does save lives. Mammograms are the key to early detection. As part of our program, we have established an ongoing program of free mammograms. With the support of Martin Memorial Health Systems and referrals from practicing physicians and Planned Parenthood, we offer certificates for free mammograms to the women of Martin County who are 30 years of age and older and who do not have health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or the financial ability to pay for a mammogram. Twice a year, usually in October and May, we also offer free mammograms through the H.O.P.E. Project Mobile Mammogram Van. With the assistance of an $8,000 grant from Soroptimist International of the Americas, the Stuart Club provided 150 mammograms in 2002 alone. Today, the Carolyn Coy Cancer Fund assists in keeping this program ongoing. TRIPLE TOUCH II: Additionally, we have instructors trained by the American Cancer Society in Triple Touch II available to speak to any organization, church, school, business, small group or individuals. Triple Touch II addresses the 3 steps necessary for proper breast health; mammograms, clinical exams and breast self exam.
